As it all unfolds

We are still here, sheltering in our homes. It’s amazing to think it’s been a month since I last wrote, on the first day of Spring, and that since that time I have not been beyond my home and Central Park. Not that things are at a standstill– the whole world is changing. NYC has been the epicenter of COVID-19, with many systems caught off guard and the realities impacting in ways in which we still can’t fathom. Similarly, perhaps a lot has changed for you, and the disruptions and uncertainties in your life are rippling out. May you be safe and in the company of your own steadfastness, resilience and peaceful core.

I know that I am in the company of my sweet family, and that this sweet family is weathering the contained life as best we can. It has been glorious, to be my children’s teacher and to spend unending hours together with lots of room to create and explore. It has been exhausting, trying to do it all and seeing a strong need to have more space. We miss our individual paths as much as we are savoring our shared journey. I think this is true for the world as well. May you be safe and in the company of your own steadfastness, resilience and peaceful core.

What I notice is the affecting presence of the company that we keep. If one of us shifts into joy, sorrow, upset, pain… it ripples through us all. How much residue is left by the changing tides has been more apparent and costly. If it goes unaddressed, dismissed, refused, scoffed at… the taste stays in the mouth. If it’s there, it has to be welcomed. This is true of the company you keep, you have to welcome what comes like an honored guest. To be admitted, accepted, conversed with… allows it to see and be seen. A Tantric scripture, the Pratyabhijnahrdayam confirms the affecting presence of all subjects and objects– the impact of our present company is certain. COVID-19’s impact is certain, but how it unfolds is still very much up to how we meet it. May you be safe and in the company of your own steadfastness, resilience and peaceful core.

Knowing this to be true is also the very doorway through which we can be sure we are not affected unconsciously. This is why we must grieve, acknowledge the frustrations, ride the waves when they errupt above the surface. To be affected consciously, to be awake to our impressionable limited awareness, saves us from being unduly shaken, lands us in our own inner resevoir– the space within each of us that is replete and blazen, untouched by the changing ripples on the surface. May you be safe and in the company of your own steadfastness, resilience and peaceful core.
