Refreshing Inspiration

We had one of the most lush Spring seasons here in NYC. Meaning we’ve had lots of rain, which delayed the warm sunny days. But it’s been worth it, as the lushness is now flooding our senses with incredibly fresh fragrances and an abundant array of green hues.

In our asana practice, we intentionally ‘flood’ our system with information based on movement and strain, shape and breath. We do so to refresh our proprioception, to be sure that we are seeing freshly. Proprioception is how we sense our body taking up space and the amount of effort it takes to create movement and action– all extrapolated from our mental map. Fine tuning and expanding our body awareness is a powerful tool of contemplation aimed to inspire new trajectories, ease and fluidity, and an overall greater self awareness.

Without time to approach anew, it’s very easy to get locked into thinking we already know what we are seeing, limiting what is actually possible and true, driving previous narratives to supplant the greater reality that life is always offering us.

These unavoidable wheelbarrow ruts often come from well meaning intentions– we want to give our time and attention to where it’s most needed, to what we value, and to what we want to cultivate in this life. We aren’t intending to fall into tunnel vision and burn through our resources by limiting the shapes we make and the patterns we exercise. And yet time and again we do.

To take time away to refresh and renew our inspiration means to temporarily let go of what we hold so dear. Often this letting go comes out of a deep need to not become too identified by a role we are playing in a particular relationship or with any outcome we are convinced is the way forward.

This process of renewing our inspiration, as a practice, leads us to more readily accept the learning that is always around us. It is a breath of fresh air that nourishes. It is what fortifies our ability to sustain ourselves– so we are ready for when we need to lock in, pursue our path and express ourselves wholeheartedly.

The below pictures are from the grounds of the local church in my hometown that I spent a lot of time exploring as a child. I was in Colorado recently to attend my sister’s wedding and to meet her new baby girl. It was a much needed shift- to focus on these new joys in my family system. And having an hour or so to take in the beauty of this very familiar place, so many years later, definitively inspired me.

Tomorrow I head off with a group to Kripalu, to learn about and explore the Self through the layers of the Koshas. I look forward to the learning and the joy of discovery awaiting us. Join us?!

Many are looking for community and sacred space right now. I invite you to consider joining my upcoming Immersion. I am also offering continuing education for yoga teachers and yoga enthusiasts in the 2025-2026 year.
