The Depth of Winter- The Stability of the Heart

Where are we?!? It’s kind of still the beginning of the year… We are past mid-Winter… Spring is definitely not here yet… Where are you?

What has been stirring and how do we locate ourselves when we are in transition?

We’re clearly not where we were before, who we were before, and where we are headed is still formulating, still whispering.

How do we locate ourselves when we are in transition?

I often support students in ‘bringing up’ new patterns of movement and recruitment in their bodies. To explore how things take shape. Sometimes something new is right there, just waiting to be engaged. More often, in order to invite something new, we have to actively not take the shape from an old pattern that’s right there, more engrained and more accessible, itching to fire and (no judgement intended) ready to dominate.

Often, the really good work in exploring how things take shape is through such transitional times, when we are able to acknowledge that it will be something new that will help us locate ourselves, when we coaxed to undo in order to do.

We can always locate ourselves in the becoming. What has been stirring?

In the yoga practice, there is a contemplation around stability and freedom. On one level, we learn how to stabilize within a shape and then we learn how to stabilize within another. And the wider the range of shapes we can stabilize within, the freer we become. We begin to understand that we have the potential to take an infinite number of shapes, which is only limited by our ability to transition freely between them.

On another level, we stop locating ourselves solely by where we are positionally (to whichever vine we have in hand as we swing from tree to tree, from circumstance to circumstance). We learn to stabilize ourselves in what is supporting all of the becoming, what is supporting the undoing and the doing. We are learning to stabilize ourselves in the place where we all meet– the Self of all, the Heart.

Where we are based on time, circumstance, and the meaning that’s given to what’s changing is an important way to locate yourself. But maybe take a moment, and use these questions to lean into the Stability of your Heart, the Heart.

What has been stirring and how do you locate yourself during this transition?

The questions invite us to recognize that our Heart is stirring within us.

The questions invite us to recognize that no matter what is changing, we are within the Heart.
