The Chaos of Life- as a Gift

In the Yoga traditions we love to marvel at the incredible beauty and design that is the unfolding of Life. The state of awe is a cultivated one, it’s a practice to step back and see what we can see of the simultaneous complexity and simplicity that surrounds us, and is our very nature.

Life’s beauty and design, Shri, is not the same thing as expecting everything to go according to our plans or relying on ‘deserved’ outcomes. Life unfolds in cycles, it arcs and it decays. We often receive more in the low moments than in the high ones. Shri is so much bigger than any individual viewpoint could grasp as Life relies on chaos and variation to stay vibrant and responsive. Chaos is part of the beauty and the design, and the great mystery.

All this to say… I was hit by a car biking end of February 2024, and yes, that’s me with my bandaged foot. I came out of it with just a few fractures in my right foot and ankle. And, also yes, I’m keeping my leg slightly elevated on my two model skulls. (Pictures below)

This was an unanticipated, traumatic event, but I was also extremely lucky given what can happen when it’s car versus bike.

Often, such unanticipated, traumatic events can change our lives immensely and bring loved ones into and out of our lives. Within the span of the time of impact, a seam definitely opens up, inviting us to see the tenuous nature of our reality as well as the incredible power and will of Life.

It’s not a gift we ask for, but what a gift it is! Life and death, and everything in between, is blissful at its essence.

I have had to back out of most of my engagements and spend weeks healing. Which I find very hard to do and also an advantage. Hard, as I’m not used to immobility and I miss being with my communities. An advantage, as I’m learning a ton about bone pain, stages of healing, and what it means to clear weeks of your schedule to simply…. heal.

The importance of rest.
The importance of interrupting our patterned, moving about to bring about adaptation, course correction and new awareness for when we proceed forward once again.

What a perfect moment to express my gratitude to all of you who read what I write and make my life so rich and joyful. I love you!
